CREATION / AUTHORITY:

Established originally in 1988 to fulfill the statutory requirement of Texas Health & Safety Code Chapter 823. The Nueces County Commissioners Court re-established the Board on December 15, 2021 by an amendment modifying the 1991 Animal Control Order.

PURPOSE:

The Board shall serve as an advisory body to Nueces County Commissioners Court and the Animal Services Department, for the purpose of assisting in making recommendations with regards to animal acre & control policies, as well as serving to ensure the Department's compliance with all applicable statutory requirements.

DUTIES:

  1. The Board shall acquaint itself with Nueces County Animal Services' function, needs, regulations and community issues for the purpose of providing advice on policy deemed effective to promote animal welfare outcomes consistent with county goals and objectives as outlined by Commissioners Court.

  2. Provide a public forum for discussion of Animal Service's needs and services.

  3. Advise Department Supervisor and Commissioners Court in matters pertaining to the care and maintenance of the Animal Shelter's facility and impounded animals, including compliance with state law, local rules, department policies and procedures, and budget priorities. Reviews County orders on Animal Control and makes recommendations for amendments/revisions.

  4. Works with Animal Services Supervisor to set standards for the County Animal Shelter. Submits bi-annual reports to Commissioners Court concerning the Animal Services program with its recommendations and advice concerning same.

COMPOSITION

Pursuant to Texas Health & Safety Codes Section 823.005(b) the Board shall be compromised of at least one (1) licensed veterinarian, one (1) county or municipal official, one (1) person whose duties include the daily operation of an animal shelter, and one (1) representative from an animal welfare organization.

The Board shall be compromised of a minimum of seven (7) and a maximum of eleven (11) members.

TERMS

Two year, staggered terms.

MEETS

Meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month, beginning at noon, at the Nueces County Animal Services offices, located at 4540 FM892, Robstown, TX. The Board shall meet a minimum of three times per year or more often as needed.
