The purpose of the Juvenile Sex Offender Program is twofold:

  1. to prevent recidivism by providing proper community based services to juveniles and their families
  2. to protect the community by enforcing specific terms of probation set forth by the Juvenile Court.

The Juvenile Sex Offender is a  counseling group. It is facilitated by licensed sex offender therapist through the local Family Counseling Service. It is designed to assist each participant in understanding him or herself and his or her offending behavior. The counseling group works together to learn to break the cycle of sexual abuse and assist each other in becoming more productive citizens
and eventual role models.

The curriculum includes:

  1. identifying the thoughts and feelings that led to their abusive conduct,
  2. understanding and dealing with their own history of victimization,
  3. developing empathy for their victim(s),
  4. developing healthy problem solving skills,
  5. developing respect for others,
  6. learning anger management skills and recognizing potential relapse triggers
  7. developing appropriate methods of gratifying their needs.

The program also requires that parents be actively involved in their child's participation with the rehabilitation process. The parents participate in their own separate facilitated counseling group. The continued success of this program relies on a strong foundation of communication, monitoring and supervision between the Probation Officer, the juvenile, his parent(s) and family therapist. The juveniles maintain their accountability through regular case review hearings before the sitting Juvenile Court Judge. Compliance and progress are reviewed in increments of once every three months to insure the effectiveness of the program.
