Community Service Restitution
The Make Amends Program (MAP) is a community service program developed by the Nueces County Juvenile Justice Center. It is meant to address the needs of the victim and the community. Juveniles committing an offense involving property loss, property damage or personal injury, are expected to make restitution to the victim or the community. The Make Amends Program promotes changes in offender attitudes. By making young offenders accountable for their behavior. They are required to repay the victim for financial losses. They may also be required to perform community services in a non-profit agency in order to “make amends” for their delinquent conduct. This is done in a way which will help develop their self-esteem” and appreciation for the rights of others.
The Make Amends Program utilizes a mixture of four approaches for each participant including: Monetary Restitution, Direct Services Restitution, Community Service Restitution and Mediation through Dispute Resolution Services. The child may be ordered to make payments to the victim (Monetary Restitution). They may also be ordered to perform direct services for the victim (Direct Services Restitution). Or finally they may be ordered to perform community service at an educational or non-profit organization (Community Service Restitution).
The Make Amends Program is structured to help victims receive justice and compensation. IT also ensures the juvenile offender is held accountable for his delinquent conduct.
